Auckland Zoo Charitable Trust

‘... until we can turn the tide of human-induced animal extinctions, good zoos will continue to be essential to the survival of many species.' – Gerald Durrell, author and conservationist

About Auckland Zoo Charitable Trust

The Auckland Zoo Charitable Trust was established in 1992 to contribute to Auckland Zoo by promoting and coordinating fundraising initiatives. The Auckland Zoo Charitable Trust also assists in the maintenance and further development of Auckland Zoo.

The Zoo Trust is comprised of five volunteer Trustees; Clynton Hardy, Grant Graham, Laurie Mayne and Ian Margan, led by Chair, Penny Whiting MBE. The Trustees are dedicated, passionate and professional members of the community and fully support Auckland Zoo in its projects, and conservational objectives.

The Auckland Zoo Charitable Trust administers all donations and bequests which may be put towards major capital development projects, conservation and breeding projects for threatened native and exotic species, wildlife research, education and training in wildlife health. The Trust also has the capability to raise funds and support other organisations within New Zealand that align with its objectives.

The first project financed entirely from funds raised by the Trust is the recently completed $4.6 million New Zealand Centre for Conservation Medicine. The Trust sincerely thanks all the organisations and individuals who have supported this project.

The Trust has also donated funds to the Zoo's New Zealand Fauna Conservation Centre and its Sealion and Penguin Shores exhibit. In addition, it provided seed funding for the Old Elephant House refurbishment.

The next major fundraising project for the Trust is the Zoo's new New Zealand development, Te Wao Nui. The Trust has been asked to fund $7m of this project, which is scheduled to open to the public in early 2010.

Another initiative developed by the Trust is the Auckland Zoo Charitable Trust Bequest programme. Leaving a conservation legacy is a great way to give wildlife a future.
